A business process is a collection of related, structured activities or tasks that produce a specific service or product (serve a particular goal) for a particular customer(s).
As business owners we are continually working on implementing processes and systems for customer service, product, admin, closing deals, the list goes on, but for the small business owner this task can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Cost, time, training, and the uncertainty of even where to start sometimes moves this project to the back burner.
But, being prepared for the unexpected (emergencies, personal, family, health and even a holiday) can lead to peace of mind.
Does your business come to a grinding “STOP” if you do?
No business wants to cease and exist when the “unexpected happens”, here’s a few ideas especially for solo entrepreneurs that can offer solutions to have things running smoothly when “you’re not in the office” and keep you on top of your game.
The added bonus: it just makes good sense to have a plan in place all the time!
What is the process for?
What’s working for you?
What’s not working?
What service do you want to deliver?
What is your goal?
Do you have a goal?
What are the gaps in your business, the missing links?
What do you need help with?
Do you need to hire?
If you hire, what does the job require?
What do you hope to achieve?
What is the end result?
Is it duplicable?
Can anyone do it?
Address every concern/issue/ question that arises and then develop a process that becomes the solution in a simple step by step formula that you could “teach” someone.
- Keep it simple – but START
- Are you working with a CRM – are you making great notes that someone could review and hop right in
- What are you doing to keep in touch with your clients – newsletters, emails, phone
- What do you do when you close a deal?
- Will your social media presence continue when you can’t – business page, LinkedIn, Twitter, BLOG etc
This exercise was invaluable to me personally when the unexpected happen, and it was so rewarding to learn that my business continued even when I couldn’t.
I do remember thinking that I didn’t have the time, energy or financial resources to even start. BUT, I hate to admit it, I WAS WRONG!!!
The creation, implementation of systems/processes/procedures has been invaluable to my business – it has allowed me to grow as a business owner in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
So do yourself a favour and JUST START.
Back up plans are essential to your survival as a business owner, you need to consider the what if’s?
It’s important to seek out a professionals advice who can educate you on:
- Critical Insurance ~ that can help you get over the rocky road.
- Delaying mortgage payments, Credit Cards, etc.
- Access to savings or money such as a line of credit or business loans
